Another Birthday Shout-out, in English this time

This is a picture of the birthday girl, Kelly, who is my first daughter-in-law and the mother of my most recent grandchild. Note that she is smiling in the picture. You would be hard-pressed to find a picture of her where she isn't smiling, and that is because she is almost always smiling. I could tell that the early days of motherhood were taking their usual toll when I visited in May, because once in a while the trademark smile was replaced by looks of frustration, puzzlement, or just plain fatigue. Not often, though. Kelly taught elementary school music for about 8 years, and I would suspect that's pretty good training for motherhood. (Late-breaking correction - Kelly tells me that she actually taught for 11 years, up to a couple of days before David was born. And yet she still smiles! Amazing...)

I'm sorry to say that this is a bit late - Kelly's birthday was yesterday, but we ended up running around a good deal yesterday, including taking a train to a foreign country (Luxembourg, as it happens,) and so this didn't get done. Luxembourg, incidentally, is absolutely chock-full of banks, in case you were wondering. In fact, there doesn't seem to be much else, besides a very nice new symphony hall, which was the purpose of the trip.

But to return to the point, I'm going to use this occasion to let Kelly in on a secret - babyhood passes, unbelievably quickly, leaving you wondering how it is that your little snot-nosed kid (and I mean that literally) saddening has a baby of his own. So enjoy these days, Kelly, tough as they can be, because they'll be gone before you know it. And a very happy birthday to you, my belle-fille.
