Night on Bald Mountain (Organ Transcription)

$9.99

This is a rather difficult transcription of the iconic Moussorgsky piece.  (Who am I kidding - it's really difficult.  I wouldn't attempt it myself.  It was transcribed for Adam Brakel.)  It's very effective if I do say so myself - the premieres were played on three different instruments, one a 2 manual Cassavant, and it worked very well on all of them, thanks to Adam's virtuosity and clever registrations.

Away in a Manger (Rollett)

$9.99

This arrangement pairs the traditional text with an Irish folk tune. This tune is called “The Meeting of the Waters”, and has nothing whatsoever to do with Christmas. However, it fits the traditional Christmas text very nicely, having a very lullabyish feel to it, if I may be allowed to coin a term of highly limited usefulness. This is accompanied by organ and obbligato soprano instrument - either flute or oboe would work, as, I suppose, would a violin.

A performance of this arrangement may be heard on The Pittsburgh Camerata's album "A Pittsburgh Wassail." It is available on iTunes.

Lift up your heads (Gibbons)

$9.99

A performing edition that I made by adding a 7th voice to the original 6-part (SSAATB) texture. This was to deal with the alto parts, which were sometimes distinctly too low for female altos, and otherwise too high for tenors. A few chord doublings at the end allows everybody to sing the last two bars.

O Tannenbaum

$9.99

Not the more familiar version, but a tune and text from around 1600. The setting is SSAATBB choir, although it isn't all divided, with oboe and French horn. The oboe and French horn parts are written in C in the score, and could be played on appropriate stops on the organ instead, so you wouldn't have to have the instruments available. Text is German - a translation is zipped with the other files.

Ivy and Holly

$9.99

Not "The Holly and the Ivy," but a different text and tune. The text was written by John Keegan, and is said to have been first published in The Irishman, number 1, January 1849. I found a setting, to the Irish tune “O’Carolan’s Lament,” but I wasn’t wild about the tune. Given that it wasn’t written for the text, but was a lament over the death of a general who was the Irish army’s last best hope for defeating Oliver Cromwell, I didn’t feel that there was anything sacred about that pairing of the text and tune.

El desembre congelat

$9.99

This is an arrangement of a traditional Catalan carol. The organ part borrows heavily from Louis-Claude Daquin's organ noel. You could use piano, but it really wouldn't be the same, and I wouldn't recommend it.

Text is Catalan. The translation I had at the time my group performed this was not very accurate. I have since found a better one - it is available on Choral Public Domain Library.

Barn Jesus

$9.99

Not, as you might expect, a carol culled from an old Hank Williams recording, but a Danish carol on a text by Hans Christian Anderson and tune by Neils Gade. Text is Danish - a translation is zipped with the other files. As to pronunciation, you're on your own. When The Pittsburgh Camerata performed it, my husband fortuitously had a conference in Denmark several months before, and was able to persuade one of his colleagues to read the text for him onto a recording device. Unfortunately I have long ago lost that, but may still have the IPA file I made sitting around...

Orientis partibus

$9.99

This is the traditional processional for the Feast of the Ass (or Feast of Fools.) The English horn serves the function of assisting the altos in the donkey's bray. The text is Latin - a translation is zipped with the other files. There is some alto and bass divisi.

O bella o bianca

$9.99

My edition/arrangement of Orazio Vecchi's madrigal. This is quite lively and fun. Text is Italian - there is a translation bundled with the zip files. The piece is a cappella, but could be appropriately accompanied on guitar, as it is a serenade. Although it is fast, the harmonic rhythm is not, so it should be quite doable for a competent guitarist. Nothing is doable for an incompetent one...
